nombre indio Tsan-Usdi ("Little John)

(3 oct. 1790, cerca de Lookout Mountain, distrito occidental de N.C., EE.UU.–1 ago. 1866, Washington, D.C.).

Jefe indio estadounidense. Hijo de padre escocés y madre en parte cherokee, se crió como cherokee. Combatió en la guerra de los creeks, al mando de Andrew Jackson (1813–14). Después fue presidente del Consejo nacional de cherokees (1819–26). Como jefe principal de la Nación Cherokee (1828–39), resistió los intentos del gobierno por apoderarse de sus granjas y tierras en Georgia y recurrió infructuosamente a Jackson en defensa de los derechos de los indios. En 1838 se vio obligado a conducir a su pueblo por la infame Trail of Tears hasta el territorio de Oklahoma. Allí fue jefe de la nueva Nación Cherokee Unida (1839–66).
